PROJECT IDENTIFIED:
Unmanaged Target Shooting Site Cleanup – Sisar Canyon Vicinity
PROBLEM/CONDITION TO BE SOLVED/IMPROVED:
Removing trash, casings, lead and other refuse related to bullets and spent cartridges remaining on-site after several decades of informal, unmanaged target shooting in this un-designated location just inside the USFS boundary.
Closing off vehicular access to the abandoned “wildcat” oil drilling site at the end of Rifle Range Road at the USFS boundary. (see attached Google Map). 34°27’03.2″N 119°08’30.1″W
- Around the late 1940’s and early 50’s a “wildcat” exploration oil well was drilled and then abandoned when found to be unproductive.
- The well was capped off and drilling equipment removed, but the graded road to the site remained.
- Since then it has been the site for unmanaged target shooting by anyone able to get there, which necessitates traveling over privately owned land adjacent to Sisar Canyon Road.
- Private landowner has given permission for Ojai Adventure Club to access site for cleanup operations via existing road that passes over his property.
- Unmanaged target shooting has been “off-limits” since 2005, when the Regional Forester – the top forest official in California – ordered a “fundamental change in policy” and ordered the closure of the forest to target shooting.

PROPOSED HANDLING:
- Ojai Adventure Club will plan and coordinate as needed with USFS and private property owners as needed.
- Ojai AC will coordinate volunteers and provide equipment and transportation as needed to perform the task.
